I Pounced Upon the Compliment

I pounced upon the compliment,

Gathering it up to my breast,

Like a beloved child,

Squeezing the fleeting joy,

Until it seeped in to me,

And echoed.

The attention, strangely welcome,

I had forgotten the need,

And ached for more,

Preening like a peacock,

I became arrogant,

My ego, spoiling it for everyone,

As usual.

  1. We’ve all done that, I think. Or maybe that’s just some of us. :/
